If you really want to learn the art of wildlife photography, then you should be aware of the basics of wildlife photography. It is rightly said that wildlife photography is one of the most challenging but rewarding hobby or career. It takes honest practice, persistence and hard work to master the real art of wildlife photography.

For mastering wildlife photography you have to have the basic knowledge of camera handling. As majority of the photos you take will be captured with the help of telephoto lens. This will test your patience and dedication as you have to wait a much longer time for the animal to come in the range and taking right pictures through right angles before that wild animal leaves from the site. Many of the times the animals you want to shoot will be yards away from you so that you have to take your pictures with more precision and care with zoom lenses.

While shooting wildlife you always have to watch out for minute movements happening around you. And for that purpose you have to be attentive for the longer time. The sunlight also plays a very important role in taking these wildlife pictures. For this purpose your camera should have the proper adjustments according to the various angles of sunlight so that pictures will be much clearer without any fuzz.

Also wildlife photography is all about capturing a particular moment of the wildlife. It makes or breaks your photography style. Many of the best wildlife photographers out there are really skillful in shooting the exact speed and momentum of the particular animal they are watching. But to be the best wildlife photographer out there you should first master the basics and you can begin this process by starting to shoot your own home pets. If you learn to shoot their natural movements and habits in their natural style then you can say that you are ready for outdoor wildlife photography.

There are no shortcuts to learn the basics of wildlife photography. Rather you have to practice it religiously and with full devotion. You should have to pay a special attention to your cameras. You have to take care that your camera has a quick shutter speed which is very necessary to take more than one shot as you roam around the wildlife to take pictures. In this type of photography most of the times you have to follow your subject to shoot many pictures at a time in one shot. This process is mainly known as “panning” which consists of taking faster pictures in one snap as you mover closer to a particular animal you want to shoot.

Thus wildlife photography is all about your patience, persistence and shooting skill where you need to wait a longer time to take the perfect picture. But at the end of the day it is also the most satisfying art where you get the really thrilling and enjoyable experience to cherish for.

London, March 25 – Actress Lindsay Lohan took a tumble into a prickly plant after over-zealous paparazzi got in her way as she tried to enter a house party.

The 23-year-old was heading to a party in Hollywood after a drinking session at the Trousdale nightclub on Sunset Boulevard when she took a tumble into a sharp plant. She blamed her high heels and photographers for the fall, reported contactmusic.com.

‘Only I would get pushed into a large, sharp plant by crazy paparazzi!!! I need to start wearing more flats,’ she posted on her Twitter account.

Lohan was then helped to her feet by a friend and some photographers who stopped taking pictures and came to her aid.

Jim Marshall at Woodstock in 1969.
Photograph by Henry Diltz
Jim Marshall, the photographer who captured some of rock & roll’s most unforgettable images including photos of Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar at Monterey Pop and Johnny Cash flipping the bird at San Quentin, died in his sleep last night in New York. He was 74.

Look back at Jim Marshall’s iconic photos from his book Trust.

The Beatles photographed backstage at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California, on August 29, 1966.
Photograph © Jim Marshall

After starting as a professional photographer in 1959, Marshall was given unparalleled access to rock’s biggest artists, including the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Who, Miles Davis and Ray Charles. He was the only photographer granted backstage access for the Beatles’ final full concert at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park in 1966 and he also shot the Rolling Stones on their historic 1972 tour.

Grace Slick and Janis Joplin photographed in 1967.
Photograph © Jim Marshall

Marshall developed special bonds with the artists he covered and those relationships helped him capture some of his most vivid and iconic imagery. In one of his last interviews, a chat with Rolling Stone last October, Marshall summed up his rapport with rock stars best when talking about Joplin: “You could just call her at home and be like, ‘We have to take some pictures,’ and she’d say, ‘OK! Come over!’ She trusted me and knew I had her best interests at heart. I only wanted to make her look good.”

Read Rolling Stone executive editor Jason Fine’s tribute to Jim Marshall.

Marshall was born in Chicago in 1936 and was raised in San Francisco. He purchased his first camera in high school and started documenting the artists and musicians in San Francisco’s burgeoning beat scene. After serving in the Air Force, Marshall returned home, where he had a chance encounter with John Coltrane: when Coltrane asked him for a lift, Marshall obliged and the jazz legend returned the favor by letting Marshall shoot nine rolls of film.

The Grateful Dead photographed in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco in the 1960s.
Photograph © Jim Marshall

Soon after, Marshall moved to New York and was hired by Atlantic and Columbia to shoot their artists at work in the studio, including Dylan and Charles. But it was when Marshall returned to the San Francisco in the late Sixties that he produced his most indelible work, taking hundreds of photographs of the Dead, Joplin, Jefferson Airplane and Santana. Marshall recalled one rare instance when he photographed an intensely intimate portrait of Grace Slick and Janis Joplin — supposed rivals at the time — at Slick’s home in 1967. “All that shit about them being the fighting queen bees of rock & roll was bullshit,” Marshall recalled. “They got along really well but they had never been photographed together.”

Marshall continued to be prolific even late into his life. Most recently, he snapped portraits of everyone from John Mayer and Ben Harper to Lenny Kravitz and Velvet Revolver. He has published five books, including 2009’s collection Trust. Marshall, who had no children, was passionate about his work up until the end. “I have no kids,” he said. “My photographs are my children.”

Chances are, you’ve seen this photo before. It’s probably the most famous photograph of Johnny Cash. It was taken by legendary rock photographer Jim Marshall, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 74.

Marshall made a name for himself in the 60s and 70s, capturing the rock legends of those times – The Who, Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, to name but a few. Marshall’s photos were different from the general photographs of rock stars that appeared on the pages of magazines. He managed to convey and intimacy and familiarity with his subjects that made you feel as if you were getting to know them just by looking at Marshall’s pictures. They never looked staged, they never looked like they were part of an elaborate photo shoot. His photos captured the essence of each and every one of the stars.

It wasn’t just the musicians he capture, but the era surrounding them. You can get a feel for what was going on in a specific music scene in his photos. Whether it was in his capacity as official photographer at Woodstock or shooting the Beatles’ last concert or just getting shots of Miles Davis kicking back in a gym, Marshall was able to take to one singular moment and have it convey emotion, personality and the complete essence of what was going on in that split second.

There’s an established relationship evident between photographer and subject in most of his photos, and that’s the difference between a portrait of a person and a portrait of a personality. Marshall captured the personality of the people he shot and the time – the specific moment even – that they were living in.

There were other photographers during his time and after that tried to do the same thing, but Jim Marshall always did it better, and with more character.

A DVD recorder in the home used to be simply a luxury item, but it is quickly becoming somewhat of a necessity as a result of the multitude of digital technology available on the market. While a DVD recorder originally was used simply to record your favorite shows and movies onto DVD, rreplacing the VHS recorder, they have evolved to take full advantage of digital media. DVD recorders can be used to record images from your digital cameras and camcorders, preserving your home movies and photos on a disc, and they can similarly play all types of digital media, from DVDs and CDs to MP3 discs and JPEG discs (discs containing image files).

Thankfully, the price of DVD recorders has decreased somewhat as the technology and the product has become more common, but there is still no reason to skimp on something that can be rendered useless within months if the quality and manufacturing isn't up to par. For under $200, you can purchase a well-made, brand-name DVD recorder that should meet all your expectations and provide all the necessary features to enhance your digital lifestyle.

The Samsung DVD-R145 DVD Recorder is a slim and stylish DVD player/recorder combination, able to record on virtually any DVD media, including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, re-writable DVD-RAM and dual layer DVDs for extra recording capacity. The remarkable technology of the Samsung DVD Recorder even allows you to skip backwards or forwards and watch recording video during the recording process when utilizing DVD-RAM discs. Another useful option is the ability to skip commercials from recorded television shows.

The Samsung DVD Recorder also features the ability to increase the resolution of recording through an “upconverting” process when used in conjunction with a specialized HDMI cable.

Front-located inputs allow you to easily connect your digital cameras or camcorders and record directly onto a DVD with minimal fuss, while maintaining perfect image quality.

Programming is relatively simple, using either a traditional timer or simply pressing record and setting the allotted recording time during with a simple touch-button. The DVD recorder automatically creates chapters for you, and you can afterwards edit your recorded movies and images, deleting, copying, or renaming as you see fit, as well as creating playlists and moving about video clips.

A quick start guide helps you set up quickly and get started using your DVD recorder within minutes, and the manual uses both text and illustrations to better explain the more advanced aspects of the Samsung DVD recorder.

The Panasonic DMR-ES30VS DVD Recorder/VCR Combo is a useful combination of both VCR, and DVD player/recorder, enabling you to record all your VHS tapes onto DVD as well with ease, as well as eliminating the need for your old VCR. The Panasonic DVD Recorder/VCR Combo utilizes all types of standard DVD recordable media and using VBR technology, allows you to fit more video than normal onto a single-sided DVD (at a small loss of quality).

Like the Samsung, the Panasonic also features a handy time-slip ability to watch a previously recorded show while simultaneously recording another.

Recording from VHS to DVD is quick and painless, using a simple quick-step procedure or a single touch of a button, and when recording anything onto DVD, you wont have to worry about recording over something previously recorded; the DVD recorder automatically searched the disc for blank space. Chapters are also created automatically for you, and editing is an easy process with a little instruction from the manual.

The Panasonic DVD Recorder is an excellent choice for individuals with a fair amount of VHS tapes still in their library, or simply as a standalone DVD recorder with the VHS option should you ever find yourself in possession of one of those old blocky VHS tapes.

Another great option is the Sony RDR-GX330 Single Tray DVD Recorder. Compatible with the same DVD recordable media as the previous models as well as double-layer DVD recordable discs, the Sony DVD Recorder also offers different quality modes, allowing you to fit more video on a disc

Front inputs also serve to simplify recording from digital cameras and camcorders, and similar features such as simultaneous recording and viewing, and playback of MP3 discs and JPEG discs are also available on the Sony.

Menus are created easily and editing functions are available with certain DVD formats.

I knew I was looking at something special as soon as I arrived on this professional photographer’s website which is totally white with no banner, no frills, no flash intro. The photography does the talking. Why I have not seen this photographer’s work before is puzzling and yet when I looked at the many achievements of Greg du Toit and competitions he has won, I realised that I had probably brushed past him on the Internet before today. This photographer who was born in Africa in 1977 stands out from the crowd and raises the bar of wildlife photography. The work of Greg du Toit has deeply impressed me and I not only enjoyed gasping at the quality of his wildlife photography which is inspired by African wildlife, landscapes and people but I also enjoyed the stories and personal challenges behind each photograph.

Greg outside his custom-built hide
deep in the heart of Southern Tanzania (2007)

This man has put his health at risk by “sitting in the water for two hours at a time absolutely motionless and waiting for anything to come and drink in front of me! The water is warm but after two hours my vibration reduction technology is working overtime as I am pretty numb and cold. But that is not the worst! A huge troop of baboons spend most of the day at the waterhole and being baboons, they do a substantial amount of their business in the water, so it does not smell all that pleasant and neither do I after soaking in it for two hours! There are also these mean little midges that feed at surface level and have been chomping on my arms. This has resulted in a very persistent and itchy rash. The water-snails are also crawling onto my arms and seeking refuge under my watch-strap! The worst though are water-beetles who every now and again give me an excruciating pinch and I have to grin and bear it, sitting motionless so as not to scare off any potential subjects! “ That particular photo shoot resulted in Greg contracting bilharzia and parasites from the baboons!

Wild Lion
“These lion were, and for good reason, shy and skittish. In order to capture them on film, I waited patiently until a particularly hot period infuriated the thirst of the cats. Lying in the water for two months, I contracted bilharzia and parasites from baboons. This image offers partial solace to the feeling that I was born a century too late.”

Red-cheeked Cordon-bleu
“Living in the wild bush country of Southern Tanzania, an ancient grinding stone left by early inhabitants makes for a perfect birdbath. At first, the birds are wild and shy but as time progresses, friendships form. The tiny, yet immaculate Red-cheeked Cordon-bleus allow me to approach within a few feet.”

Portrait of a Predator
“Leopards are for me the most beautiful cats on the African continent. I usually shy away from shooting straight portraits but the golden yellow eyes of my subject complimented by the yellow brown African grass in the background, lead me to include this one in my collection.”

Zebra and Dust
“Ensconced in my hole in the ground, the equatorial sun beating down and Tsetse flies gorging on my flesh, sitting motionless became an extreme test of photographic passion. Ultimately, one brave zebra stuck his head through the dust for a sip of water. The rapid fire of my F100s shutter had never sounded so sweet.“

Leopard Yawn
“The winter sky in South Africa’s lowveld region is brilliantly blue! This leopard was positioned in the fork of a Marula Tree with her golden coat juxtaposed superbly against the blue sky. I had the psychology of colour on my side with the potential makings of a half decent photo: superb light, a clean background and an exquisite subject! All that was missing was a striking pose or gesture on the leopard’s part. Half an hour later, she obliged.”

Thunderstorm
“It was late afternoon on the great plains of Africa and a storm brewed furiously in the east. I watched in awe as a solitary Kongoni wandered across the plains. The cloud formation was like nothing I had seen before, and using a lone tree, I tried to create a sense of balance. Minutes later the storm hit and I became hopelessly disorientated not knowing where my camp was and only getting back in the dark.

Nomads of Massai-land
“In the months prior to this frame, the lioness and cubs had stubbornly refused to drink in the daylight hours. I had waited in my hide until dusk for them on numerous occasions, and twice, upon walking back to camp, I met all eight on foot. I never carried a rifle and both meetings were rather surreal, with the cubs tentatively inquisitive, running forward with ears pricked while mom kept a beady eye on my every movement. I like to think that through such experiences, I gain a greater understanding of my own niche in the ecosystem. Some say my years of bush living have made me blasé?’

Predator of the Night
“I like to portray my subjects in their own environment and also to relate my work to characteristics of their behaviour. Leopards are the ‘proverbial stalkers of the night’ and to portray this, I switched my flash off and used a spotlight from the side. The high ISO performance of today’s modern cameras, allow us to shoot scenes previously impossible to capture! (A special thanks to Outdoorphoto for sponsoring me camera equipment for this project)”

Calabash & Hand
“Traditionally the Maasai only ate blood, water and meat. Once the calabash is full, a stick is used to stir and coagulate the blood. The brilliantly red and highly oxygenated fluid cascades over the edges, staining the calabash and making for a graphic close-up shot.”

Visit the Website of Greg du Toit

I’m not sure how far I would go for my photography and whether I would be willing to take risks like this. How far would you go as a photographer to get stunning shots. Would you be willing to endanger your health and even put your life at risk for that potentially award-winning shot?

Wedding photographers require creative zeal as well as technical knowledge of cameras, lighting and posing. Creative wedding photographers constantly strive to improve their work and endeavor to avoid the pitfall of producing the same poses week after week. Today’s brides want something a little bit different, so that their wedding pictures will be truly distinctive.

Unlike most other commercial areas of photography, wedding photographers need not be full-time or “professional” photographers. Most weddings occur on weekends-when most people are not working at their regular nine-to-five jobs-and anyone who owns the proper equipment and possesses the ability can photograph a wedding. For this reason, many people are or would like to become what professional full-time photographers call “weekenders”. Weekenders frequently start out very innocently, when a friend or relative who knows that they take “nice pictures” asks them to take pictures at a wedding.

Temperament is as important to a wedding photographer as fine pictures. A typical wedding day may include encounters with crying mothers, intoxicated or angry guests and a variety of people who may intentionally or unintentionally become bothersome. Being able to deal with interpersonal relationships is therefore an invaluable asset. Short tempers, ulcers, a heart condition, and the like are not conducive to this type of work. On the other hand, some photographers, because of their charm, are so well liked that the client will be very happy with the pictures if they are slightly flawed in some way.

Once you decide to become a wedding photographer, two important questions arise. The first is how to learn to become a good wedding photographer. The emphasis here is on the word good, since anyone who takes pictures, assuming that the photographs are relative clear and properly exposed, can be considered a wedding photographer. The second question is whether to freelance or work for a studio. Apprenticeship may be a little-used expression in most other fields. It is however, the best way to learn wedding photography.

To really appreciate the strains and complexities encountered, you must go out and see what it’s like. The standard procedure calls for the apprentice to first watch what the photographer does. Once he thinks he knows what is happening, he will be able to assist the photographer in setting up equipment, he will be able to assist the photographer in setting up equipment or posing people. Later, using his own equipment, he will be allowed to shoot doubles of what the photographer takes. When the photographer feels confident in the work of his apprentice, he will allow him to shoot parts for the wedding alone. The final stage is when the apprentice-now photographer-does an entire job on his own.

Some wedding photographers work for studios as weekenders, some for themselves as weekenders, and many, to the chagrin of studio owners, do both. Most studios want people who are experienced and who can show samples of work already completed. A studio may train you if it feels that you have potential and show desire. Even if you have experience, a studio may want to retrain you to follow its particular style. Studios expect their photographers to work on a regular basis. They do not want to book your own jobs, nor are they happy if you work for their competitors. The greatest competition for most studios are weekenders, and usually their own! Talented freelancers have the potential to earn high fees. Getting started is the most difficult problem. No one wants you to experiment on their wedding day. One shortcoming of being a freelancer is that some brides insist that some formal pictures be taken in a studio.

If you are considering a workshop, please take a look at the Lighting Essentials Workshop Site at Learn to Light. Now on to the LE Interview with Ken Easley.

1. How long have you been in business? Was it a slow transition or did you just open shop?

For whatever reasons, I never felt I had the “chops” to work in photography until I had my degree. A month after graduation with a BFA in Photography in 1980, I was a full time assistant in a commercial studio. Been making my living doing nothing but photography since. 2 years assisting, 4 years as an in house corporate photographer, then my own studio.

2. How did you get started? Any mentors or great stories here?

My first job was with Rick Gayle. He really opened my eyes to commercial photography. I saw first hand the level of commitment it would take to make it, and he also helped me realize that I could satisfy my creative drive in a commercial photography setting.

I’ve been interested in photography since I was 10 or 11. My first camera was a brownie starflash, a gift from my aunt. My strongest memories are trying to shoot frogs and waterbugs in Oak Creek Canyon. And my Dad complaining about how much film I was using and how expensive it would be to get it all processed. The next year I got an “Ansco Developing Kit”.

3. Describe an average week at your studio.

This has really changed over the years. I have gone from doing lots of small jobs, shooting almost every day, for years on end, to having several days between shoots. The crowd sourcing of digital images has made the small product illustration, for several hundred dollars or more, a thing of the past. Fortunately, somewhat by design, my average shoot is now much more extensive, more expensive and more profitable. Factor in the preproduction time and post production time expected on each shoot and I work just as many hours in a week. But, I’m doing fewer invoices.

4. Why Phoenix? Have you considered anywhere else?

Born here. I guess I just got used to it. No snow, no earthquakes, no hurricanes, no tornadoes, just the heat which I really don’t mind. My work has taken me all over the US. Personal travel even more. I’ve been to many places I love. Briefly considered lots of them, but no matter where I go, it just feels good to come home. I do love to travel though. I figured long ago that if my goal was to be a really big name in the biz, it pretty much had to be NY or Hollywood. Yes it’s possible from other places, but much harder, almost a fluke. I made a conscious decision to stay local and try to work with companies that could send me out of town, rather than try to build relationships long distance. Now with the internet firmly taken hold, it matters less where you are from.

5. What motivates you, or gets you going? What do you use for inspiration?

Mostly other artists. Sometimes photographers, sometimes painters or sculptors. Anything that is visually new or interesting. That’s part of the appeal of travel. Seeing new sites (oh, and food.)

6. What is it you like the most about being a photographer? Do you do anything else for a hobby or avocation?

Paraphrasing the cliche, “a bad day as a photographer is better than a good day at almost anything else.” I’ve mentioned this as a generality in conversation but it did actually happen to me. After a really bad day in the studio, nothing went right, not feeling well, etc., even left to go home early. Within a couple blocks of leaving the studio I passed a crew of street repair guys. It’s 110 degrees, they are working with hot smelly asphalt and shovels. My day was not so bad.

I am a serious amateur woodworker. I like to think I’m an artist in that area too. While I do make practical things, including furniture for the house, etc. I really like woodturning. After working with art directors, meeting deadlines, running a business, it is very therapeutic to take what would most likely be a piece of firewood, and make a great big pile of wood shavings. If I happen to get a cool little bowl or vase or something out of it so much the better.

7. Are there any downsides to being a commercial photographer that you would like to change? How would you change them?

So many rambling thoughts on this. I have often thought that photographers should be licensed like doctors, or even plumbers and hair stylists. Make it illegal for someone to photograph a real job just because they have a 6 megapixel camera. I know it wouldn’t work and probably shouldn’t, but can’t help thinking about it sometimes. The fact is, I’m really not interested in the photo assignments someone would trust to an unknown. I’d rather work with creative dedicated people who care about the end result. They see me as a part of the solution, not an afterthought. The change will ultimately be determined by the marketplace. Like anything else, some people will only want their company or brand to be associated with the best, or at least convey the idea that there is nothing better, while others will be satisfied with the cheapest solution to showing the customer the goods. The buyers will have to decide where along that scale they want to be. Individual photographers will have to decide where they will draw the line for their own work, I hope to stay much closer to the best.

8. What was your most memorable assignment?

It’s been a while now, but I spent two weeks in Alaska, shooting for the National Park Concessioner at Denali. We really got special treatment, did some great work, and saw things that blew my mind. Denali, (Mount McKinley) on summer solstice with not a cloud in the sky. Standing next to a beaver dam and looking over at a water level just below my eye level, being held back by some sticks and twigs, amazing.

9. Any ‘war’ stories you would like to share? You know, the ones that always start with “There was this one job where….”

Every assignment has a little of this. I’ve never been a photojournalist, although that is part of what got me interested in photography as a kid. Nothing as harrowing as those guys see regularly. However, I did see my life flash before my eyes while shooting for a river rafting company on the Grand Canyon. I was way out on the nose of the raft while going through a rapid, Crystal Falls, and a guide who was holding my feet let go (to keep himself from going over) and I cartwheeled off the front, camera in my right hand and a rope wrapped around my left hand. I came up underneath and face against the bottom of the raft, and was more or less pinned there for what seemed like several minutes. Eventually I worked my way out from under and got my head above water a few yards downstream from the rapids. A couple shots of brandy and I was fine. It was a truly great trip.

10. What would be your ideal assignment?

I like shooting way too many things. I guess a corporate job for a large multinational, where “corporate photographer” was on the same level as say, CFO, or CIO. Where I could determine what was next up to document, advertise or illustrate, and how. The company should be in several countries, have several subsidiaries in varying lines of business, and it would be nice if they were doing something good for the planet as well, perhaps they would have a large charitable arm or foundation. Of course all expenses would be covered, and I would have access to any equipment I wanted. I would never have to send an invoice or negotiate an assignment. fee, yet had a very respectable income.

11. Future plans for (your name) and his/her photography?

I’ll be happy just to stay on top of technology and trends for my commercial work. I think I do a pretty good job of that but it takes a determined effort. Perhaps, like thousands of other photographers, try to do a little more fine art, and maybe even teach a little.

12. Tell us a little about your new work…

Personal work is always a struggle. If you are an ice cream taster for a living, you might not want ice cream on the weekends. That does not mean you don’t love ice cream. Ongoing projects include simple studio floral/botanical shots. When I can, a series with the working title “modern ruins” that documents abandoned architecture. And a few other ideas that have been rumbling around in my mind for quite some time. Commercially, I will continue to strive for the interesting and challenging work. I’ve always done some video production, starting in 1990 or 91, and will look for opportunities for pushing that a little.

13. Oh, and what is on the music box right now at your studio?
(yes, it was supposed to be 12, but what the heck…)

Right now my iTunes is playing “The Crusaders.” My taste in music is fairly eclectic. From Green Day to Billie Holiday. Last album into the collection was Tomo Fujita – Jazz/Rock/Blues electric guitar instrumental (iTunes says his genre is blues.)

Rafa Benitez’ chances of bringing Ajax star Luis Suarez to Liverpool this summer are decreasing with the news that Manchester United and Barcelona are stepping up their interest. The Uruguayan international has been in superb form in Holland with reports from the Dutch press suggesting that he will have his pick of three of the biggest clubs in European football at the end of the season.

Suarez tops the Dutch scoring charts with 26 goals in 25 league appearances (all starts), so it’s unsurprising he is attracting so much attention. Liverpool will need to offload Ryan Babel to raise funds which could be their downfall with Barcelona and Manchester United ready to pounce for the creative South American.

Suarez has been playing in Holland for the past four seasons and has consistently scored goals whether playing on the flanks or just behind the main striker. This campaign has been his most prolific already scoring 4 more league goals than his previous highest tally. This doesn’t include a sensational 6-goal haul in Ajax’ 14-1 domestic cup win over WHC in December. Last season he scored 22 goals in 31 league appearances (30 starts) as Suarez finished joint 2nd in the Dutch scoring charts. Despite the Uruguayan’s best efforts, Ajax finished 12 points behind champions AZ and one point behind 2nd placed FC Twente meaning they failed to qualify for the Champions League. This season Martin Jol’s team sit 3rd, seven points behind leaders PSV.

Ajax’s failure to qualify for the Champions League last season led Suarez to urge the club to bring in new recruits. He told Sportsweek in the summer, “It would definitely be useful for Ajax to sign some quality players. It’s up to the coach to decide on which position we need to strengthen the squad. However, we could use some physically strong players in my opinion.”

“I’m extremely disappointed that we failed to qualify for the Champions League once again. I need to play at top level in order to keep improving as a player.

“Nevertheless, missing out on Champions League football is not just bad for me, but also disastrous for the club. Ajax have to wait yet another year to play at the highest level.”

Ajax may miss out again so Liverpool, Manchester United and Barcelona may be the teams to provide the Uruguayan with the ‘highest level’ of football required although Rafa Benitez’ team are facing a battle to clinch 4th spot. The player’s versatility is of interest to Sir Alex Ferguson and Josep Guardiola as he can fill a number of positions. He would provide competition on the flanks for the likes of Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ryan Giggs or could partner or compete with Wayne Rooney up front.

Ajax may be 3rd in the Dutch top division, but there’s no disputing who is top of the scoring charts. Suarez has scored 26 league goals, nine goals more than his nearest competitor. Only six of those strikes have arrived via the penalty spot. Not only has Suarez been his sensational form domestically but also in Europe and for his country. The Uruguayan has scored 6 goals in the Europa League with 4 coming in one match v Slovan Bratislava. He has also scored three goals in his last seven international appearances.

The 23-year-old began his career in his homeland with club Nacional where he won a Uruguayan title before moving to Groningen in the summer of 2006 for €800,000. In his only season for the club he scored 10 goals in 29 league appearances (26 starts) before Ajax made their move for a fee of €9.5M. He has been monitored by Rafa Benitez and Sir Alex Ferguson for a number of seasons but he has really caught their attention since he moved to Amsterdam. The fact Ajax were dumped out of the Europa League by Juventus has only increased speculation he will be leaving in the summer for either Anfield, Old Trafford or the Camp Nou.

Suarez has been a big hit since his move to Amsterdam after scoring 65 goals in just 89 league appearances (84 starts). His present contract expires in 2012 but with Liverpool, Manchester United and Barcelona stepping up their interest, this may well be his last season in Holland.

The Uruguayan with 9 goals in 28 appearances for his country does have a reputation for ill-discipline which is perfectly illustrated by the 25 yellow cards he has received in 4 seasons in Holland. He was also sent-off on his international debut against Colombia in February 2007. However, for what he lacks in discipline, he certainly makes up for in talent. Not only does he score goals but he is also very creative. Liverpool or Manchester United fans will certainly enjoy his talents if he does finally join one of them. Ajax have opened the door to a move with comments made in the press during the last transfer window.

“It’s up to the technical staff to decide whether Luis will be allowed to leave the club. Nevertheless, we’re ready to talk about a transfer if an extremely good offer comes in,” club director Rik van den Boog was quoted as saying in Algemeen Dagblad.

“We still expect Luis to stay in Amsterdam until the end of the running season, but we are ready to listen to other clubs if a transfer is in the club’s or the player’s best interest.”

Ryan Babel has failed to make a big impression on Merseyside but is still highly regarded in Amsterdam and his homeland which suggests he may well be a make-weight in any deal struck with Liverpool. However, Manchester United will be strengthening their squad this summer with Suarez high on Sir Alex’s hit-list.
The latest set of financial results released Tuesday confirmed the
ability of United to generate cash, reporting a turnover of $216
million in the six months ending Dec. 31, up almost 20 percent
year-on-year. But it's the debt level — about $1.1 billion — arising
from Malcolm Glazer's 2005 leveraged takeover that concerns United
fans.

The groundswell of opposition to the Glazer regime is growing
despite the team chasing a fourth straight Premier League title, after
collecting its first trophy of the season on Sunday by beating Aston
Villa in the League Cup final.

A group of financiers, who describe themselves as being of “high
net worth,” met under the banner of the “Red Knights” in London on
Monday to formulate a plan to purchase the team.

“This group is supportive of current management but are looking at
the feasibility of putting together a proposal to be put to the Glazer
family regarding the ownership of Manchester United,” the Red Knights
said in a statement. “These discussions are in early stages and no
contact has been made with the Glazer family. For such a proposal to be
viable, it would require the involvement and support of Manchester
United supporters worldwide.

“Any new ownership model would aim not only to put the club on a
sound financial footing, but would also aim to put the supporters at
the heart of everything the club does. In the coming weeks the Red
Knights will continue to work with MUST and others to formulate our
proposal.”

The United supporters group has stepped up its campaign in recent
week to force the Glazers out of Old Trafford, notably by getting fans
to wear green and gold — the colors of Newton Heath, the club's
original name.

“Initially the Red Knight Group has effectively set a challenge to
Manchester United supporters to demonstrate they wish to see an
alternative ownership proposal developed,” MUST chief executive Duncan
Drasdo said. “In the first instance supporters are being asked to do
this simply by joining the free online membership of the Supporters
Trust and swelling its ranks to an initial target of at least 100,000.”

It’s not often that I get to write about my great passion of sport on this blog but I have noticed something brewing around Manchester United and seen a few early signs that merit looking at it further. Without going in to too much detail Manchester United are now owned by some fairly dodgy Americans who seem intent on ruining the club as they plunge it in to over $1 Billion in debt to help line their own pockets. A fans revolt has been brewing for the last couple of years but things seem to have stepped up a little recently and it is not just because fans are getting angrier but just that the protests are getting noticed by more people mainly because the fans have recruited a very powerful force…The team behind Barack Obama’s online election campaign…Blue State Digital.

Who Are Blue State Digital?

Blue Sky Digitial are an Internet marketing, strategy and crucially online fundraising agency who are widely regarded as one of the main reasons that Obama got in to office. Blue State Digital’s campaign for Obama resulted in more than three million individual donors contributing more than $500 million and they have been recruited by the Manchester United fans to do exactly the same sort of job for their club.

Why Would They Do It

Blue State Digital seem to be specialists at mobilizing large groups of people and getting them to rally behind a cause and dig deep in to their pockets. With over 300 Million Manchester United fans all over the world you are looking at an amount of people even larger than the population of America. The Glazer family who own Manchester United are said to have no interest in selling even at a $1 Billion valuation so the cause would seem like an impossible one but some would have said a couple of years ago that it was impossible to elect a black man to the White House.

How Are They Doing It?

Social Media To Spread The Word

The key with this capaign is the social media element and getting the word out to mobilize the group troups (the Manchester United fans) in to action. The mialing list has more than trebled from 30,000 to nearly 90,000 in just a couple of days and the campaign is already starting to feel as if it is taking hold. This will be a long hard slog and many channels will be used over the course of the campaign but early signs are that Blue State Digital are already starting to make some great traction.

Rally the troops

The first thing they have done is to target fans who attend matches by telling them to start donning the colors of the original Manchester United team or green and canary. This will start to hurt the owners in the pocket and crucially get the word spreading from the hard core fans on the terraces out to the millions of fans around the world. For all of Barack Obama’s online presence he was incredibly powerful on television and in the real world so for any campaign to succeed you need that catalyst.

The Money

There have been countless fan revolutions in the past but none that have involved this sort of money. To prize the club away from the Glazers this new movement is going to have to raise north of a Billion and that sort of money is not easily come by. It will be a combination of some institutional money but also fans are expected to be asked to get involved. The number become a little easier when you think that each fan would only have to donate $3 each to raise the billion dolloars.

Will It Work?

The latest set of financial results released Tuesday confirmed the ability of United to generate cash, reporting a turnover of $216 million in the six months ending Dec. 31, up almost 20 percent year-on-year.
Germany coach Joachim Low talked up the importance of captain Michael Ballack ahead of the friendly against Argentina in Munich on Wednesday night.

Ballack's role in the team has come under scrutiny in recent months but Low is adamant the Chelsea midfielder is key to his plans ahead of this summer's World Cup finals in South Africa.

“Michael is an unbelievably important player who leads the younger players,” he said at today's press conference.

“His presence in the squad is of huge importance.”

Ballack will have to be at his best tomorrow against an Argentina side which is likely to contain the likes of Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi.

He may be joined in the centre of midfield by his former Bayern Munich team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger, although Low was not giving too much away this lunchtime.

“It is possible. Argentina are very dangerous through the middle and a partnership between Michael and Bastian could work very well,” he said.

If Schweinsteiger is moved inside it could create an opportunity down the right for Toni Kroos or Thomas Muller, two youngsters who have made a big impression in the Bundesliga this season for Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern respectively.

“When Bastian plays in the middle, we need an alternative down the right and both (Kroos and Muller) play in that position,” said Low.

“To bring in youngsters against such an opponent may be a risk but it's one I am willing to take.”

Low admits the clash with the South Americans will be a useful indicator to gauge their progress as they continue their build-up to South Africa.

“It is an important test for us,” he added.

“Argentina have outstanding individuals. We must not make many mistakes.”

Low expects an attacking approach from a team coached by former World Cup-winning captain Diego Maradona.

“As a player he was a genius, marked by creativity and offensive brilliance,” he added.

“The Argentinians play attacking football and that philosophy certainly stems from the coach.”

Irrespective of the result at the Allianz Arena, Low is adamant his side's plans are right on track.

“We are on target,” he said. “We have developed tactically and we have many young players in the squad.”

Maradona himself said little at yesterday's Argentina press conference as his uneasy relationship with the country's press showed little sign of improving.

He did admit: “Germany wants to win, we want to win.

“It should be a spectacular game. We must have respect from Germany, my team fights until the last minute.”

Messi is likely to start in Munich with in-form Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain playing a lone attacking role.

The city of Munich has a lot attractions to offer for all ages and tastes. Whether you are interested in history, architecture or art; whether you enjoy strolling through parks, fancy attractions like a trip to the Bavaria film studios, guided tours or long for a visit to one of Munich’s famous traditional beer gardens, you’ll always find something exciting in this multi-faceted city.

Allianz Arena

Three years only after the foundation stone was laid, the Allianz Arena was officially inaugurated in May 2005. The project was financed equally by the Bavarian capital’s two soccer clubs, TSV 1860 München and FC Bayern München. The design is by architects Herzog & de Meuron of Basel, Switzerland.

The three-tiered arena has a capacity of 69,900 seats, of which 2,200 are “business seats”. The playing field has a surface of 8,000 sqm. A total of 2,874 inflated foil panels form the 64,000 sqm roof and façade: the biggest membrane shell in the world. Huge fans inside the stadium keep the panels inflated at a constant pressure.

The lighting is the most spectacular aspect of the futuristic construction: the façade lights up in a white and blue or red and white pattern, depending on which of the two Munich teams is playing.

The making of Allianz Arena

The Allianz Arena is a football stadium in the north of Munich, Germany. The two professional Munich football clubs FC Bayern München and TSV 1860 München have played their home games at Allianz Arena since the start of the 2005/06 season. Both clubs had previously played their home games at the Munich Olympic Stadium since 1972, where FC Bayern München played all of their games and TSV 1860 München most of their games.

The large financial services provider, Allianz purchased the rights to name the stadium for 30 years. During the 2006 World Cup it was known as FIFA World Cup Stadium Munich.

Bayern coach Louis van Gaal welcomed back Franck Ribery into his starting lineup after a week's hiatus, but was forced to do without Daniel van Buyten, who remained unavailable due to a calf injury. Diego Contento started in place of the Belgian, and …

Continued from part 2.

The Achilles heel

Having shot with the Pentax K-x over a couple of weeks, its Achilles heel is clearly the battery life. See, the thing is that Pentax chose to design the camera without a proprietary battery solely using AA batteries, Very practical, if you are out shooting and run out of power. Simply buy four fresh ones at the nearest store. Something that's possible regardless of the fact if you are in Minnesota or Mozambique. Pretty cool.

↓ Batteries, the Achilles heel of the Pentax K-x.

The problem, or Achilles heel if you will, lies in the fact that camera packs so many battery intensive features (video, HDR, digital filters to name a few) the approach of using AAs simply doesn't work. To be fair, the test was solely done on off-the-shelve Alkaline AAs, not fancy Lithium or other exotic metals batteries. But still, I expected the battery life to be better. With Alkaline AAs and standard to heavy use (video, HDR + filters), I got maybe 4-5 hours.

Hm! I really hope that the next iteration of the K-x comes with a li-io battery, or Pentax makes the camera less power intensive.

Great looking images

So, in the end this is what really matters. So maybe the battery system is poorly thought through and the image processor is a bit on the slow side, but if the image quality is there all that sorta diminishes. And the Pentax K-x doesn't disappoint.

↑ Image quality. The Pentax K-x with the Pentax 16-45mm f4 DA lens. A great everyday combo.

To my taste, the K-x saturates the images a tad too much. But I know a lot of people prefer that. Not surprisingly with all its functionalities the camera does allow you to make a custom image setting. Here you can tweak the saturation along with sharpness, contrast, etc. Other entry-level cameras gives you a handful of preset image settings (portrait, standard, neutral, etc.) that you then can tweak if desired. Pentax just makes it a little more manual where you have to tweak it all yourself.

RAW images from the camera does not have any setting applied, and thus are not as saturated. As a really cool feature Pentax allows you to select the non-proprietary DNG format straight out the camera. Very cool. And frankly, something all DSLRs should have as an option.

↓ It's like having a small computer in the camera. Convert your RAW images to JPG right in-camera. RAW image on top with the converted JPG on the bottom.

On top of that, you can actually process your RAW images right in camera. Cool when you need a JPG right then and there. But I do prefer converting my RAW images on a computer, if not for anything else then the larger screen allowing you to more properly view and tweak the image.

With its 12MP CMOS sensor, the K-x handles high ISO really well. Pitting it against fellow entry-level DSLRs, a non-scientific comparison gives it a clear edge over the Nikon D3000, Sony a330 and Canon XSi, and a slight edge over the Nikon D5000. Pretty sweet.

↑ High ISO noise under well exposed conditions with plenty of available light (left: ISO 3200, middle: ISO 6400, right: ISO 12800).

As a final note, I was kindly lent the Pentax 16-45mm f4 DA lens for this test. A great lens with superb build quality and optics. The lens produces great sharp images with a good colour rendition and contrast. Yes, it basically covers the same focal length as the 18-55mm kit lens. But the better build quality, constant aperture and great optical quality makes it worth the extra $$$, if you are looking for a replacement for your kit lens.

↑ The 16-45mm f4 lens.

All in all

I was pretty excited about shooting with and testing Pentax K-x. It was the first Pentax I have shot with, so trying something else than Canon, Sony and Nikon was great. The camera did not disappoint on the image quality front, delivering great images. Perhaps a bit too saturated straight out of the camera as JPGs for my taste, but that is what a lot of people prefer.

The camera has so many bells and whistles, more than I have ever seen in any entry-level camera, that up until know I have needed more than 2,000 words to just somewhat cover them from a photographic and practical perspective. The camera world's equivalent to a Swiss Army knife. At times it actually seems like Pentax is trying to do too much with the camera, and other parts are having a hard time keeping up.

So if you can overlook 'cosmetic' flaws, such as slow write speed and reduced battery life, for great image quality and functions to keep you busy for years to come, the Pentax K-x could be a good bet for a next camera.

For the technically interested: All product shots are with the Nikon D700 and Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR Micro lens. Additional light was added with two speedlights bounced off a white ceiling. Speaking of Swiss Army knifes, here is how to really open a wine bottle without a corkscrew. Warning: video contains jolly, drunk Frenchmen.

Product Description
The AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is a high-performance super telephoto zoom lens that has been designed to meet the demands of both digital and 35mm format SLR users. It offers a 4.3x zoom with a range of 70-300mm (105-450mm on a DX Nikon D-SLR) and features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that ensure superior optical performance. This lens incorporates Nikon’s second-generation vibration reduction system (VR II) that allows flexible hand-held shooting by stabilizing the image to the equivalent extent of using a shutter speed that is four stops faster when compared with a conventional lens (as determined by Nikon performance test). The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) and IF (Internal Focusing) ensure fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds….
3 Piece Filter Kit UV, FD, CPL 37mm Filters w/ Hard Case for Canon Camcorders Review

This is a great filter set — especially for the price. I was mainly interested in the circular polarizer for shooting thru glare while recording fly fishing experiences such as fish rising to surface flies or emergers. You might have to try quite a few filters to beat this polarizer. I don’t know, but it works well enough I’m not going shopping for another; but if I ran into a fanatic who could certify a superior filter… well, especially if I could distinguish their results from mine, I’d be interested.

As with any other filters or camcorders, most users will find that if they stack/combine filters, they’re going to see the outer filter in the corners of their videos. The only way to get away with that is to use an adapter for larger filters. No can do, otherwise.

I have run this polarizer on my lens however, attaching my 37mm hood to that. No problems with this arrangement… but of course, you have to re-affix the hood to whatever position you run the polarizer in. To do this without having to re-set the hood constantly, I set my polarizer in a neutral/vertical alignment. You lose some of your polarizer’s efficiency by doing that, but still it is sufficiently effective for any usually rapidly developing situations where you simply cannot dynamically adjust the polarizer for whatever side angles are involved. When you need to do that, you remove the hood. Otherwise, this is the position you should pre-set your polarizer in anyway, so that you get the best overall results. So there’s no disadvantage or reason not to attach a hood to the polarizer for catching scenes immediately.
